im a chingstah

ask anyone what is a YouTube, and they will tell you the same thing. but have you heard my answer before? if you are curious to know what I'm going to say, please read on...

YouTube is deemed as a video sharing website. who would have thought that a website like that would ever be able to produce some of the most popular upcoming stars. although they only started sharing videos of themselves as a form of blogging, which is called video blogging. when i first saw the word vlogging, i was hesitant about the word's existence. i didn't even know what it meant until one day, my sister told me about it and said that it is actually short for 'video blogging'.

so then, i started searching and watching videos of random vloggers (also another word to describe video bloggers) and instantly, i was hooked. all the comedic stunts earned them several hundred thousands of viewers or subscribers which also indirectly, alleviated them to the path of stardom. and amongst all the huge variety of genres and themes the vloggers opted for, the comedians are usually the most supported ones.

however, amidst all the different vloggers i have stumbled upon, one left me a particularly deep impression. and with some of his most recent videos, he not only showed his music-composing talent, but also acting skills which explained clearly as to why he had infinite subscribers.

personally, i felt that this video was one of his best, and had captured my attention the most. even with the usage of words that might appear to most, as jargon, he managed to portray a character which may be unfamiliar to a lot of us, yet, with this song of his and the music video, although, being linear model of communication, it was able to instantly lift the communication barrier between his ideas and that of his viewers'. his lyrics are about an Asian wannabe gangster which they call 'chingstah' or also known as 'chingster'. meaning, Chinese gangster. overall, i felt that the description of a stereotypical Asian gangster is somewhat true. especially the fact that most of them are merely wannabes.

wannabes usually feel that gangsters are really cool and wants to be just like them. however, being a Chinese myself, i know that these people usually only attempt to act like one, but would never do anything that would actually result in their classification into the group 'gangsters' but instead, be collocated as 'wannabes'. and when this happens, i would only say that they are desperate and pathetic.

i mean, why try to be someone else when you can be yourself? wouldn't it be easier and effortless to just be yourself? if you are saying that people wouldn't like you the way you are, I'm telling you now, that it's not true. everyone has a different perception and view on the same things. cause "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and one person doesn't represent all. so, don't give yourself an excuse that you are not likable as yourself. cause that reason is no longer valid. besides, if you never give yourself and others a chance, how would you ever know that people would not like you for who you are?

i know that first impressions are important to most people. i mean, who wouldn't want to look good and make an excellent first impression? human tend to judge a book by it's cover. but that is only the case when your exterior is all that they can see and judge. sometimes, it takes more than just good looks for someone to like you. it takes a much deeper understanding to exist, in order for someone to sincerely like you for who you are, despite your flaws. because when it all comes down to it, beauty fades. and when that happens, what's in your heart is the only thing you have left. right?

jeez. i guess vlogging is really a better alternative to get your message across without having to type until your hands are numb.

You know, I have never heard of vlogging before! I must really be outdated!

Anyway it was interesting to see the video about Chingstah and I realised back in the old days, most of us guys kinda wished we were one of those cool Chinese gangsters but you know, you can kind off grow out of it and know theres much more important things to do than to be a wannabe.

Haha, maybe I should start vlogging!

HAHAHA that video is funny! Yes, I do agree that vlogging is an interesting alternative to blogging, especially in this Youtube era. You're right about the perception part. I also got the perception that they're not REAL gangsters, and just wannabes here for our amusement! :)

vlogs are undeniably more interesting compared to blogs. since viewers are able to listen and see the vlogger and owing to eye contacts, hand gestures as well as facial expressions, i think, messages are delivered more effectively.

perceptions are subjective. first impressions are important. if we give a lousy first impression, i kinda feel we'll be perceived negatively. after all, people rarely give second chances.

hahah i love nigahiga! especially when he lipsync with the other dude..the japanese dude..for destiny's child say my name.

anyway..not only vlogging would make u more popular but i guess..it's cz many ppl DONT have the chance to prove their talent..

and one more thing first impression is important... its a sad world BUT yes. we always say...hey..he's a nice person.. buttt.. at the end of the day..when u are to tie a knot wit someone...it must be someone whom u can SEE everyday u see.. hehe..and most guys are created that way..to be turn on visually and girls are the more emotionally ones. anyways..nice blog grace! :D God bless and take k!

vlogging sounds like a lot of fun. although, i have to disagree to the point that it is better than blogging.

what i meant to say was that, vlogging isnt necessarily better than blogging... yes, it may be easier to film yourself talking about something, rather than having to type it all out and in the end, hurt your hands and fingers.

but sometimes, speaking in front of a camera doesnt come naturally to everyone. camera-shy people might not find it comfortable to be talking to a camera. and thats when blogging comes in handy. cause then, they would be able to express their feelings without having to feel awkward in front of a camera... plus, sometimes, expressing yourself in words can be much easier than having to say them out loud.

but thats just my opinion.

cyrus : i guess you are right. all these are just kind of like a phase that most people go through... then when they are over it, they will look back and wonder why they have once been so crazy about it. =D

anonymous : you're right. perception is objective. it really just depends on what people want to interpret with the things that they see and observe around them. and no matter what they want to think, it is difficult for us to change their minds

yafuizzz : yeah. you are right. vlogging may not be the reason that they are popular. but it sure is a good way to prove your talents in the comfort of your own room... hehehe.

yes. first impressions are very important. thats why getting it right the first time, is vital... i mean, of course we wouldnt want people to assume us to be someone we are not, right?

to me, vlogs are better compared to blogs because we get to watch videos instead of reading. for a person who dislikes reading like me, it is so much better if i was able to listen to what people have to say instead of reading word by word. besides, i think watching videos is more interesting compared to reading because unlike reading, i can see the face of the vlogger and know their expressions whenever they say something, and therefore i can feel more relatable to what they are trying to say

im confused on what the focus of this entry is about. is it on the vloggers and vlogging vs blogging, or like what it is labeled under, "perception"?

i think it is supposed to be regarding perception. like how perceptions are different based on different opinions and how distinct people see and interpret them diversely. i feel that what she's trying to say is that, we may make sense of the same video differently and moves on to prove her point by giving her opinion on vlogging vs blogging.

Kris: well, i think your perception of me is scarily accurate. couldnt have said it better myself. but just to add on, what i was tryin to say is that, based on the video, that is how the vlogger has interpreted his idea of a chinese gangster. and by commenting on his video, we are fitting in meanings to the video according to our perceptions, which is mostly distinct.
